Council gets new Mayor, wants applicants for vacancy

During special called May 14, 2019 meeting, the Forney City Council met to perform election-related activities. (watch official video)

  • Approved a Resolution canvassing the returns, including the returns of early voting ballots cast in connection therewith, and declaring the results of the General Election held on May 4, 2019; authorizing issuance of a Canvass of the General Election; and providing an effective date.
        Ms. Brooks read the vote totals.
  • Administered the Statement of Elected Officials and Official Oath of Office to the Candidates Declared Elected Council Member Place 2, Shaun Myers, Council Member Place 4, Kevin Moon, Council Member Place 6, David Johnson and Mayor, Mary Penn. Watch Video
  • Approved a Resolution appointing Council Member Shaun Myers as Mayor Pro Tem in accordance with Section 3.04 of the City of Forney Charter for a term of one year.
  • Discussed the appointment procedure or appointment to City Council Place 5 vacancy in accordance with Section 3.05 of the City of Forney Charter.
        Mr. Thomas said could reach out to those who ran in recent election; he reached out to Ken Hill, who had the closest race. Mr. Hill indicated he might be interested, but Mr. Thomas has not received a response as of now. Mr. Moon said wished that would have happened; he's open to taking applications. Mayor Penn says could be candidates they don't know about. Mr. Johnson said he agrees, been done that way in past. City Attorney Mr. Thatcher said charter states have 30 days to appoint, next week won't be enough time. First meeting in June will need to consider it, may have enough time for 2nd June meeting. Mr. Thomas said with budget process coming, would be good to get someone soon.
